Team Staffing

Following Brian Chave’s move to become Bishop Richard’s Chaplain in July of last year the Churchwarden’s of the Team, Ruth Hulse and I have been having a meeting more or less every fortnight to discuss the way forward with regard to staffing in the West Hereford Team.
Bishop Richard, Archdeacon Paddy and Prebendary Paul Towner, the Rural Dean, have each attended one of these meetings. Ruth and I have also seen the Bishop and the Archdeacon on other occasions. As part of the process to appoint our new Team Vicar, Bishop Richard has directed that we engage with the Diocesan procedure for appointing an incumbent.
This includes a review of ministry of the whole team and the writing of a statement of needs. This document will form the basis for ministry in the Team for the future.
The way the statement of needs is created is by a Team wide consultation which takes place on a Saturday morning from 9.30am until 12.30pm. The meeting is facilitated by two officers from the Diocesan Local Ministry Office.
Everyone from the Team who has any interest in mission and ministry in West Hereford is invited to attend. The guidance notes indicate that the meeting should be a priority for PCC Members and Churchwardens.
Our Consultation day is Saturday 27th February and we shall meet at Lord Scudamore School, Friar Street, Hereford, HR4 0AS where there is plenty of parking. Please do put this date in your diary and do your utmost to be present.
Without wishing to pre-empt the decision but making the most of what seems to be an answer to prayer we expect to be able to appoint Ruth as Team Vicar after the summer. While Ruth completes her curacy she will be known as Team Vicar designate.
I am also delighted to be able to write in this article that Mr Stuart Vince who is now living in the area and worshipping at Holy Trinity Church is soon to be licensed to exercise the ministry of a Reader within our Team. Many will already know Stuart at Holy Trinity and he will join Malcolm Robertson at All Saints and Chris Webb at St Nicholas who both exercise ministry across the Team.
Please continue to pray for the guidance of the Holy Spirit for the work of your church in West Hereford.
Rob North

The clouds rolled back, and there was glorious blue sky and sun!  It must be time for the Summer Fete.

The new attraction this year was the BBQ, selling sausages and burgers in rolls.  This was a great success.  A variety of quiches, salads and ploughman's lunches were on offer as well, and like the BBQ were easily sold out, as were the strawberries and cream, and the cakes.

All in all, it was a very successful day, and thanks to all who contributed prizes, cakes, and help.

Confirmation 2014

Confirmation marks the point in the Christian journey at which you affirm for yourself the faith into which you have been baptized and your intention to live a life of committed discipleship. This affirmation is confirmed through prayer and the laying on of hands by the bishop. Our prayer is that God the Holy Spirit will enable us to live and interpret the teaching of Jesus in your life.  Further details

If you would like to prepare for Confirmation by exploring aspects of the Christian faith then we invite you to a series of meetings, usually held on a Sunday afternoon or evening.  We will think about what we understand by God as the Holy Trinity, the life and rituals of the church and being a disciple of Christ.

In baptism we affirm our faith in God and affirm our decision to turn to Christ, repent of our sins and renounce evil.  Confirmation gives the opportunity think about what that means and the impact of faith on our lives.

The next Confirmation service for the West Hereford Team Churches will be held in Hereford Cathedral on Pentecost Sunday – 8th June at 10.00am.  We will offer two sets of meetings, one for adults and one for young people, starting after Easter.  At this stage please contact the West Hereford Team Office (01432 273086) if you would like to be confirmed this year.  You may not feel that you have enough information to make a decision.  If that is the case then please come along to the preparation meetings and find out more before making a commitment to be confirmed.

Festival of Churches

Message from Anthony, Bishop of Hereford:

The Festival of Churches gives us all a great opportunity to warmly welcome villagers and visiors to every church across our whole diocese.  I know that congregational members everywhere have been involved over many months in doing a huge amount to plan events for this weekend so that others can enjoy their church buildings as much as they do.

Do come.  Do join in.  Do bring family and friends.  Do enjoy the beauty of our amazing heritage of church buildings.  Do see them as living places of worship that they are, where God is present and known and loved.

The churches ar your churches.  Their congregations seek to serve God and their local communitis and people.

Have a great Festival time!!

Visit All Saints on Friday evening, 13 September.  The choir from Holy Trinity will be having their weekly choir practice at All Saints, and a short concert will follow.  Come and see the work the Choir puts into their rehearsals to give you the service on Sunday mornings. The number of vulnerable people is rising daily as conflict continues across Syria.

More than 155,000 people have fled Syria to northern Iraq. Christian Aid is supporting Iraqi organisation REACH to provide essential items to 1,500 families around Sulaimaniya and Erbil in the north of Iraq.

‘Simple’ plan for women bishops goes to Synod

New proposals to enable women to become bishops in the Church of England have been drawn up and will be considered by General Synod in July.

The measures are a response from the House of Bishops to the Synod vote in November when legislation for women bishops narrowly failed to get the necessary majority in all three Houses.

All the General Synod representatives from the Diocese of Hereford voted in favour of the proposals in November and Diocesan Synod members gave overwhelming backing earlier this year to a call for simplified legislation enabling women to become bishops at the earliest possible opportunity.

The Bishop of Ludlow told the meeting that it was time to stop talking in terms of women bishops  and simply to think of Bishops who might be male or female. ‘ I am very open to ta simple measure that would enable all men and women to be ordained deacons, priests and bishops’ he said.

About Ruth Hulse - our new curate

My name is Ruth Hulse. I am married to John and we have 7 year old son, David and one due in October! I am very much looking forward to serving my curacy with the West Hereford Team Ministry, and John and David can’t wait to explore the river in their kayak!

For the last 2 years  I have been studying at Ripon College Cuddesdon and before this I was a church youth worker for 13 years mainly in Brighton and Oxford, where I did schools, community and church youth work, and loved it! I was very surprised when God first called me to ordained ministry in 2009 at Soul Survivor amongst 11,000 people, but here I am about to be ordained.

Whilst in previous years I have enjoyed more adventurous activities like scuba diving, sky diving and travelling, I’m now more content with Zumba and cycling (although these are put on hold a bit until after October). I’m really looking forward to meeting everyone at the 4 churches and to being a part of the team.

Twenty-year high for young priests

New statistics for 2012 show that the number of young people (under 30s) accepted for training for the Church of England ministry last year was 113, 22% of the total.  This is the highest number in the past 20 years.

The Ministry Division of the Archbishops' Council is continuing to be proactive in recruiting both young ordinands and those from Black and Minority Ethnic backgrounds (BME), and this month sponsored tow separate conferences for those thinking about ordination.  Sixteen young people, aged 15 - 19, attended a young vocations conference in Cambridge and feature in a Church of England podcast. (www.churchofengland.org/media-centre/engage-with-us-online/podcasts.aspx).

"The opportunities for young people to serve are there," says Amie, one of the delegates.  "I've been very encouraged by this conference and that's a real positive, because a few years ago it might not have been the same.  Diocesan Directors of Ordinands are not saying, "Go away you're 18 or 19.  They are saying come and explore with me".

The Diocese of Hereford will ordain its youngest candidate for years when Christopher Johnson who is training at Ripon College, Cuddesdon, will be ordained aged 24 at the end of June.  He will then start work in Weobley, Herefordshire.

"British farmers produce great British food.  Everyone knows where it comes from thanks to logos such as the farm assurance Red Tractor.  The little Red Tractor stands for traceable and independently inspected food, from farm to pack", said rhe Rt Rev  Anthony Priddis, Bishop of Hereford.  "And with consumer confidence leading the agenda,  I'm happy to back the National Farmers' Union's new Buy British campaign, suporting local butchers, farm shops and farmers markets, for example".

Women Bishops – a painful process

The complex set of proposals in the Measure to enable the ordination of women as bishops failed to achieve the required support in the General Synod meeting last November.

But that’s not the end of the discussion and decision making process.  There is a widespread consensus that the Synod cannot halt the process now.  It is likely that following meetings of the Bishops and consultation with members of the Synod there will be new proposals brought forward for the July 2013 General Synod for members to consider.  In the meantime we are encouraged to pray for the members of the General Synod, women in ordained ministry and all those who find themselves challenged by the debate.
